404: Boundaries Not Found strips the humor from its own title by the halfway point. K.L. Shadow uses the language of digital failure, error codes, broken links, missing pages, as a structural metaphor for a protagonist who has never been taught where they end and other people begin. Error Code Exercise
Each participant writes their own three-digit 'error code' for a relational pattern they recognize in themselves, something like '403: Permission Denied' or '500: Internal Server Error.' Share the codes without explanation first, then explain them. This exercise tends to produce both laughter and surprising vulnerability.
The Relationship System Map
Using a whiteboard or shared paper, the group maps the protagonist's relationships as a network diagram, labeling each connection with a system status: 'overloaded,' 'broken,' 'deprecated,' 'healthy.' Discuss what the diagram reveals about which relationships the protagonist actually wanted to preserve versus which ones they only needed to maintain.
The Missing Page
Write the page that 404 never shows: a scene where the protagonist actually finds their limit. It does not need to be triumphant, it can be small and messy and real. Read the pages aloud. Discuss what it took to write that scene and what it suggests about why the novel chose to omit it.
